Fort Wayne aviation history
outlined in new book FORT WAYNE — For years, World War II veteran Roger Myers thought the photographs and stories of early aviation should be recorded and preserved. So he took the matter into his own hands. Myers is now the author of “Fort Wayne Aviation: Baer Field and Beyond.” He will autograph copies of his new work at the Fort Wayne International Airport (FWA) gift shop on Friday, Jan. 13 and Saturday, Jan. 14, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Myers will then autograph copies at Smith Field Airport (SMD) on Sunday, Jan. 15 from noon to 4 p.m. “This book represents but a small record of the people, airports, and military activity that have brought FWA to become the outstanding facility that it is,” Myers said in a press release. “Many of my friends have provided the photographs that you will see in this book, and I appreciate the assistance of family members and friends who assisted in any way.” The book boasts more than 200 images that have never been published and highlights Fort Wayne’s flying aces, the development of the Baer Field Army Air Base and the city’s military and commercial achievements. Myers’ interest and involvement in aviation dates back nearly 75 years ago, when he was a teenager living in Coldwater, Ohio. After serving as a bombardier during World War II, he answered a newspaper advertisement for a “young man” and joined Chicago & Southern Air Lines in 1947. Myers is the current curator of the Greater Fort Wayne Aviation Museum. He authored the book along with his son and grandson, who contributed composition and technical support. “This book is an excellent portrayal of the rich history and culture that is not only alive in our airports, but in the community as a whole,” said Executive Director of Airports Torrance Richardson in the release.
